Nokia has announced the availability of Nokia Java Runtime 2.0 (JRT 2.0) for Symbian S60 5th Edition – a new, re-written Java mobile execution environment.
Still in beta, Nokia Java Runtime 2.0 features several enhancements that should “make it much more fun for you to enjoy the thousands of games and apps available in Ovi Store and elsewhere.”

The enhancements include: improved execution performance, improved application launch user experience, and one-click application installation.

Nokia Java Runtime 2.0 beta is compatible with Nokia N97 (software versions 10.x.xxx and 11.x.xxx) and Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (software versions 20.x.xxx and 21.x.xxx).

To download Nokia Java Runtime 2.0, visit the Nokia Beta Labs website.

Nokia also said that “Java Runtime will be developed and released independent from S60 releases”, hence users will be able to get the newest version directly to their smartphone, through the Nokia S60 Software Update functionality.

We’ve got two announcements coming from Nokia today, regarding Ovi Maps and Ovi Contacts. First, Nokia has released the final version of Ovi Maps 3.0 for mobile.
We don’t know what’s new in Ovi Maps 3.0 – other than the fact that it’s not a Beta application anymore. But you can download it from this address and see for yourself.

Maps aside, Nokia Ovi Contacts now supports Symbian S60 5th Edition – hence Nokia’s touchscreen phones (N97 and 5800 XpressMusic).

Ovi Contacts for touchscreen handsets has the same features found in the version for S60 3rd Edition. However, on the Nokia N97, users have something new – the “ability to integrate your instant messaging friends with the contact cards in your traditional contact list.”

Moreover, if you have an N97 and use the Favorite Contacts feature, you should be able to see when contacts are online, directly from the smartphone’s home screen.

If you don’t have Ovi Contacts on your Nokia handset, you can download it from here.

Nokia scores maximum points for its comprehensive voluntary take-back programme, which spans 84 countries providing almost 5000 collection points for end-of-life mobile phones.

It now also scores top marks for the information it provides to customers on what to do with their discarded products. However, its recycling rate of 3-5% is very poor and more information is needed on how Nokia calculates these figures. It also needs to start using recycled plastics beyond just packaging.
Nokia scores very well on toxic chemical issues, launching new models free of PVC since the end of 2005 and aiming to have all new models free of all brominated and chlorinated compounds and antimony trioxide from the start of 2010.
Nokia’s score on energy remains the same. It scores full marks for committing to reduce absolute CO2 emissions by a minimum of 10% in 2009 and 18% in 2010, from a baseline year of 2006. It provides a third party verification certificate for its disclosed CO2 emissions.
Its score is boosted by sourcing 25% of its total energy needs from renewable sources in 2007 and by having a target to increase use of renewable energy to 50% by 2010. Top marks (doubled) are given for product energy efficiency as all but one of its mobile phone chargers exceed the Energy Star requirements by 30-90%
The ranking is important because the amount of toxic e-waste is growing everyday and it often ends up dumped in the developing world. Reducing the toxic chemicals in products reduces pollution from old products and makes recycling safer, easier and cheaper. Companies with good recycling schemes help ensure that their products don’t end up in the e-waste yards of Asia.

Well, it’s a stopwatch and there’s not much to say about this cute freeware application except it is optimized for touch user interface and is very easy to handle with a big ‘Count Up’, ‘Count Down’, ‘Stop’, ‘Reset’ and the ‘Exit’ button.
Time Machine lets you count the remaining or passed time for what ever purpose you can imagine and that’s basically all it does but it does it well and you can use it whenever you need a basic countdown tool.

Time is measured in intervals of one second and for the countdown function you need to use the up arrows above the numbers to adjust the start time and than use ‘Count Down’ and ‘Stop’ buttons to start and stop/pause the timer.
Alarm function is also included and will notify you once when the countdown reaches zero (i.e.Egg Timer)
I guess that main goal was to develop comprehensible, small and accurate timing tool without bloating it with unnecessary features. Time Machine is a nice, easy to use freeware application for everyone that reminds you of timely matters, such as cooking, timing yourself for a test or speech, or hundreds of other uses, just set up the timer and rest your mind about it.
The latest update brings lot of improvements in the user interface and functionality. Now it is possible to choose between two predefined alarm tone, set volume and select style. It looks like a great update that definitely worth downloading.

LG didn’t say when its LTE USB modem will be commercially available, but this clearly depends on when LTE networks are launched.

LTE should be widely deployed around the world in the coming years.

Furthermore, it’s said that China Telecom has given LG the right to produce one third of its upcoming 3G handsets.

LG has already announced two 3G phones for the Chinese market: the TD-SCDMA LG KT878 for China Mobile, and the LG KV920 for China Telecom – both pictured below.

The company plans to release three or four other TD-SCDMA handsets this year, and 10 more in 2010.

In the first quarter of 2009, LG only had 3.8% of the Chinese mobile market share. Nokia had 32%, Samsung 18% and Motorola 8%.

LG has made some pretty impressive strides in a cellphone market during these last few years. With the demise of Motorola and the problems ailing Sony Ericsson last year, they’ve even managed to become #3 cellphone maker in the world.
And LG does not plan to stop here. In an interview to Yonhap News Agency, Ahn Seung-kwon, president for LG’s mobile business, said that they plan to become #2 cellphone maker in the world by 2012. Which means that they plan to overtake Samsung in the next 3 years.

There were also some other interesting tidbits that Mr. Ahn let drop during the interview. Among them are:

* in Q4 LG will launch a new “Black label” series phone, which will be positioned to compete with the iPhone
* LG is pretty happy with their luxury “Prada” phone line and is working on another Prada handset
* LG also has a plan to move even deeper into a luxury cellphone market, by creating it’s own extreme premium brand, “similar to Toyota’s Lexus and Nokia’s Vertu”

Will LG succeed to get to a #2 spot in worldwide cellphone vendor rankings? Unless Samsung or Nokia screws up in some major way, I strongly doubt that.

On the other hand, #3 spot is LG’s to keep now. They seem to have a pretty strong product line-up, smart business strategy and keep executing on it very well. While LG’s closest competitors – Motorola and Sony Ericsson keep sliding into irrelevance. So I expect the gap between them to widen further.

Designed for MIDs and smartphones, the Nvidia Tegra is a low power consumption chip which can provide high-res 3D graphics. The chip is reportedly used by Microsoft for the upcoming Zune HD portable media player.

Apparently, Nvidia will sell the Tegra chip to phone makers for up to $30 per unit. The chip will have to compete with chips made by industry veterans like Qualcomm and Texas Instruments.

It is no secret that Sony Ericsson is working on at least one Android phone to be released later this year. They told us about it themselves. And now the details start trickling out.
The first Sony Ericsson Android smartphone is codenamed “Rachael“, has got a big touchscreen display, and is built on Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon platform.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X5 Android

Snapdragon has some pretty amazing amazing specs – up to 1 GHz CPU, HD video decoding ,12mpx camera, GPS, broadcast TV and Wi-Fi support. Though it remains to be seen which of them make it into a new SE Android handset. Probably not all of them, since we already know that SE opted for a lower resolution – 8.1 megapixel camera on this phone.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X5 Rachael back

They have decided to market their new smartphone under the Xperia brand. And since Xperia X2 is already reserved for their next WinMo smartphone, could this be Sony Ericsson Xperia X5 we’ve been hearing about?

And we’ve also got some info on another Sony Ericsson phone codenamed “Kiki”, which I’ll put into an “interesting/strange” category.

Sony Ericsson Kiki

Sony Ericsson “Kiki” comes with a transparent glasslike display. The images are projected on this display and, it seems, can be viewed from both sides of the handset. It also has a smooth surface keypad on the front, where the numbers should appear when the phone is on. Though I have no idea how tactile it would be and whether the symbols on it are fixed or adaptable. Could go both ways.

Anyway, we’ll be watching developments on both of these handsets and will bring you the news as they come along. Stay tuned.

Slowly, but surely the Toshiba TG01 is becoming available through carriers in different countries. By 9 July you could add the UK to the list of lucky countries that have access to the first Snapdragon handset following Spain, Japan and Germany.
The Toshiba TG01 is already available in Spain through Movistar, and as we reported a while back, O2 Germany snatched an exclusive deal to offer the phone in Germany. It should have launched a few days ago but O2’s online store still has it as “Coming soon”. The prices are up though – 150 euro with a contract and 500 euro commitment-free.

The UK will also get on the TG01 action in just a week, though there’s no mention of which carrier will get it. Pricing is unknown too, but we guess we’ll learn more on the 9 July.

We’ve covered the Toshiba TG01’s overwhelming features time and again; you can read our preliminary thoughts here. We’ll just mention the three most striking features, we can’t resist – 1GHz CPU, 4.1″ WVGA touchscreen, 9.9 mm thick.

Well, well, what do we have here? A T-Mobile G1 with the new HTC Sense UI. HTC Hero is currently the only HTC device featuring the impressive new UI and even though HTC will reportedly offer it to their other handsets, all T-Mobile Android phones won’t be on that list at all. However, some Italians managed to run a ported version of the UI called SuperHERO on a T-Mobile G1/HTC Dream.
If you want to give it a go, you’ll need to flash your T-Mobile G1 with the SuperHERO ROM (see the source at the end of the article). The software includes a part of the real Hero’s firmware. Along with the sexy looking user interface you’ll also have multi-touch support enabled much like on the Hero.

Update: Obviously getting ripped Hero software will be the game of choice for many Android users for quite some time ahead. Our users have just tipped us that a new version of another Hero port has also been made available today. Still no video demo though. Check out the JACHero 2.1.

However, we should warn you that there are some unwanted side effects. You will probably experience some Bluetooth and Wi-Fi issues, occasional lags and insufficient memory warnings. Frustrating, isn’t it? But, as they say, everything has its price.

Here is a video showing what the SuperHERO is capable of:

Microsoft couldn’t help themselves but brag that the Samsung Omnia II running Windows Mobile 6.5 will be available through Mobilkom Austria exclusively starting late September. They will be the first Austrian mobile operator to get the new OS.
It’s yet unclear if the other countries will be as lucky as Austria and get the Omnia II running WinMo 6.5 straight out of the box. The official announcement stated that the phone will be available with Windows Mobile 6.1, which could be subsequently upgraded to 6.5. At least now we know for sure that this upgrade will come no later than September.

They official press release of Mobikom also states that the Omnia II sports the “biggest OLED display on a mobile device”. And it does, the Omnia II just manages to outdo its sibling – the Omnia HD, which also has a 3.7″ OLED display. The different aspect ratios lead to slightly different surface area but only just.

Still, it’s an impressive display as we saw in our preview. And with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 HSUPA plus Wi-Fi make the big touchscreen with WVGA resolution a fast portal to the Internet. The camera is no wimp either – 5MP with autofocus and D1 video recording is top of the line for Windows Mobile handsets.

Now might be a good time to clear out that the 8MP-sporting Omnia II units that appeared on some hands-on videos online are only prototypes and Samsung do not currently plan an 8MP version of the handset.

The Omnia II powered by an 800MHz CPU with dedicated graphics chip, which makes it one of the speediest WinMo devices. It is also a champ at storage with up to 16GB of internal storage and support for up to 32GB microSD cards.

GPS, DivX/XviD support out of the box, not to mention the 3D games and fancy 3D interface round of the Samsung Omnia II to be a geek’s dream. The 3.5 mm audio jack and microUSB, which was recently picked as Europe’s standard charger plug, are also greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, there isn’t any info about pricing in the press release. Anyway, we respectfully envy the geeks of Austria and hope carriers in other countries will pick up the Samsung Omnia II soon.
