Yes, it’s what iPhone 3GS users have all been waiting for – a jailbreak for the new iPhone 3GS. Geohot, who has been involved with iPhone hacking from day one, has now releases the PurpleRa1n jailbreak utility for iPhone 3GS running 3.0 firmware.
As iPhone users, you should already know that “jailbreaking” is the process of gaining full access to the iPhone OS allowing for various modifications such as unofficial third-party apps and skinning and theming.

The jailbreak is also the first step to finding a way for unlocking the iPhone for use on unauthorized GSM networks.

PurpleRa1n, the utility made by Geohot works on only iPhone 3GS devices running firmware version 3.0. Apple have seemingly closed the vulnerability used in the 3.1 firmware, so if you’ve got your hands on the beta of the new 3.1, you shouldn’t really use it.

To jailbreak your iPhone 3GS you need Windows OS (lower than ver. 7), the latest iTunes installed (and opened!) and the PurpleRa1n utility. Mac support is also coming soon.

Geohot however warns that this tool is still beta and some issues are still not out of the question. Users around the globe confirmed that it works for them and even installs Cydia.

Once that you’ve got your jailbreak done, you can then use the ultrasn0w utility from Cydia to unlock it. According to the iPhone Dev Team it should work flawlessly for the 3GS as it did for the iPhone 3G.

Bear in mind though that updating to firmware 3.1, which should become available soon, will most surely close both exploits used for jailbreaking and unlocking so always consult the Devs blog before updating.

Guns at the ready fellas, we have a big game in our sights here. The HTC MAX 4G is paying us a visit in an attempt to prove that its relatively low popularity is only due to its very limited availability. With WiMAX connectivity and one of the most complete feature sets in the WinMo realm, it’s a claim that might have some credibility.
The HTC MAX 4G was never bound to stardom, just heading to the right place. Making sense on the right market is what matters here and some handsets can only envy the MAX 4G focus. Having already previewed its Touch HD sibling we are pretty confident HTC know the touchscreen drill. But you shouldn’t take anything for granted in this business so a thorough review is certainly in order.

The HTC MAX 4G is a Touch HD – add or take – and that’s not a bad place to start. The WiMAX enabled handset skimps on 3G and that might just reduce it to a niche device with limited appeal. Or is there anything else to spoil the package? We are just about to find that out so sit down, take the weight off your feet and get ready to be treated to the MAX.
Key features

* Massive 3.8″ 65K-color WVGA display
* Tri-band GSM support
* WiMAX connectivity
* Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS (by default comes in Russian)
* TouchFLO 3D UI plug-in and gesture controls
* Wi-Fi and GPS
* Qualcomm ESM7206A 528 Mhz CPU and 288 MB DDR SDRAM
* Dedicated GPU (64MB RAM reserved for graphics)
* 3 megapixel auto focus camera
* microSD card slot
* Accelerometer sensor for auto screen rotation and turn-to-mute
* Proximity sensor to automatically turn the screen off during calls
* Touch sensitive keys with vibration feedback
* miniUSB slot and Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP on board
* miniUSB to standard 3.5mm audio jack adapter included in the retail box
* Active magnetic stylus
* MS Office Mobile document editor
* Excellent Opera 9.5 web browser
* Free WiMAX plan (Yota Russia subscribers only for a limited duration)

Main disadvantages:

* No 3G
* No Back key
* No dedicated camera key, no flash
* Poor camera performance
* Average display sunlight legibility
* No TV out port
* Video recording flops at CIF@30fps
* Battery life not up to scratch
* Fingerprint magnet front (the back is way better though)
* Too big for comfy single-handed use, on the heavy side
* No FM radio

Clearly designed for one market only, the HTC MAX 4G knows it’s never going to have the reach or popularity of the Diamond and Touch Pro, or its 3G twin, the Touch HD. Some might even argue that the MAX 4G is barely first team material, just a sub that comes on in that one game. Well, the fact is quite a lot of handsets refuse it stay where they are supposed to (the handset is exclusive to Yota in Russia) and there may be good reasons why people are sneaking them across the border.

So, the MAX 4G units that manage to escape the bear hug tend to get a warm – though not always WiMAX – reception. It’s not so hard to believe given HTC’s track record and the fact that the MAX 4G is actually a 3G-less Touch HD. There’s no doubt the MAX 4G is absolutely on target for its intended market but let’s see what it’s up against elsewhere. As usual, we start with the retail package and the hardware specs of the device. Join us after the jump for the unboxing of HTC MAX 4G.

The T-Mobile Dash 3G was officially announced and as expected is headed for a July release. It’s a first for T-Mobile – their first Windows Mobile-powered 3G-capable phone. T-Mobile’s 3G network is still expanding and is expected to cover 200 million people in the US by the end of the year.

T-Mobile is expecting about 40 percent of the people looking for new phones to go for smartphones and the T-Mobile Dash 3G is targeted at those people. The phone is an update of the old Dash and it’s designed remains pretty similar – full QWERTY Windows Mobile-powered phone, manufactured by HTC.

T-Mobile Dash 3G T-Mobile Dash 3G
T-Mobile Dash 3G • keypads of Dash 3G (left) and HTC Snap (right) side-by-side

In fact, the Dash 3G is T-Mobile’s version of the HTC Snap (also known as Maple or S522). It offers 3G connectivity, Wi-Fi, GPS, plus Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, a 2 megapixel camera and a microSD card slot for cards up to 16GB. The display has QVGA resolution and can display up to 65K colors.

The Dash 3G runs on a 528MHz CPU with 192MB of RAM, the OS is Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard. At this point, there is no information whether it will be upgradable to WinMo 6.5 or not. Anyway, Office Mobile and seamless synchronization with Outlook is as always one of WinMo’s biggest strengths. T-Mobile hope this and the GPS will attract customers by helping them “stay connected, organized and traveling in the right direction”.

The phones are not exactly the same however – the keys of the Dash 3G’s keyboard have been rearranged, some were replaced and on of the signature features of the HTC Snap – the “inner circle” button – is missing.

The T-Mobile Dash 3G will be available in black with red accents starting July at T-Mobile retail stores as well as the online store and select authorized dealers.

The HTC Magic is the second Googlephone using the Android operating system. It’s exclusive to Vodafone. The Magic is a touchscreen device with a virtual keyboard plus a trackball and buttons, making it very easy to use. The phone has a wealth of applications, from email to mobile browsing to Google Maps and access to the huge Android Market of third-party apps. It’s weaknesses are the camera and the lack of video calling, FM radio and headphone jack. But it’s still a very highly recommended phone.

The HTC Magic is the second “Google phone” to appear, running the Android operating system (the first was the T-Mobile G1.) The G1 had a lot of potential, but we gave it a “could do better” rating. So we were very keen to see if HTC had done better with the Magic. Well, the answer is yes!

Like the G1, the HTC Magic is completely Google-flavoured, with Google Calendar, Gmail, Google Talk, Google Search, YouTube and Google Maps seamlessly integrated into the operating system. If you spend your time online and don’t want to be offline ever, then the Magic is for you.

Like HTC’s other smartphones, the Magic is a touchscreen phone, but it also has conventional buttons for making and ending calls and other commonly used functions. It also has a trackball. The combination of input options adds flexibility and makes the UI quicker and easier to use. Unlike the G1, there’s no slide-out keyboard – you need to use the on-screen virtual keyboard. But the UI has been thoughtfully designed and poses no problems. The display is a good size – 3.2 inches – and the resolution is adequate, but at 320 x 480 pixels it certainly can’t match the definition of, for instance the HTC Touch HD at 480 x 800 pixels. But the capacitive touchscreen is easy to use and the combination of touchscreen plus trackball plus buttons makes it as easy to use as the iPhone. The phone has a built in accelerometer (or G-sensor) which detects which way is up and automatically rotates the display accordingly.

It’s difficult to pin down what the core functions of the Magic are – it does so many things! And by and large it does them all well. Let’s start with web browsing, which it excels at, naturally. The key ingredients that you need for successful mobile browsing are all here: a large screen, fast data connection (WiFi or HSDPA 7.2 Mbps) and a well-designed user interface. You could argue that the iPhone offers a more refined web browser with multi-touch capability, but there’s not much difference to be honest. We feel that the close integration with other Google apps more than compensates for the lack of multi-touch. One of the best features must be the in-built GPS receiver and it’s integration with Google Maps, including Street View and search. The phone is probably worth buying just for the way that you can use it to navigate around and find information about your immediate surroundings.

We’re pleased to see that HTC have taken on board criticism (from us and others) about the G1’s inability to synchronise with a PC. The Magic is capable of synching with Outlook, Windows Address Book (Outlook Express), or Windows Contacts. It also works with Microsoft Exchange Server for push email. But the Magic still won’t talk to Macs and even the PC integration isn’t seamless. Android still has some way to go here in acknowledging the world beyond Google. More usefully, the operating system comes with Quickoffice for viewing PDF and Office documents.

The Android Market is one of the key benefits of the Android OS, providing access to a wealth of third-party apps, many of them available for free. Android Market has expanded considerably since the launch of the G1, and you’ll find all kinds of useful apps here, some of which will fill the gaps in the basic phone features.

The camera is still a weak point however, rated at 3.2 megapixels and without a flash or zoom. It does have autofocus though, which is an improvement on the G1, and it’s still way ahead of the iPhone! The video camera is average and there’s no front-facing camera, so video calling is a no-no. The music player is easy to use, but the phone is lacking a built-in radio and there’s no 3.5mm audio jack, so you have to plug in headphones via the mini-USB socket. Other minor irritations include the lack of voice-dialling.

Connectivity is excellent. Not only does the phone support HSDPA at 7.2 Mbps, but it’s also quadband so you can use it around the world even if a 3G network is not available. WiFi support provides an alternative to 3G for fast data transfer. Other options include Bluetooth 2.0 with Enhanced Data Rate and a mini-USB 2.0 connector, which is also used to charge the phone.

The built-in RAM provides 288MB of memory, and you can add a microSD memory card for more storage. Battery life is excellent for a smartphone and is massively better than the G1!

We came close to giving the Magic 5 stars. In many ways it’s an outstanding device. Highlights include the user interface, Google apps and Android Market. But it’s still let down by the camera, the lack of video calling, FM radio and headphone jack, and the sense that it’s reluctant to share data with a PC or Apple Mac. It’s definitely a big step up from the G1, and it’s a very capable smartphone with loads to offer. But we’re going to give it 4 stars to reflect the fact that it has some limitations. Nevertheless, if the downsides that we’ve listed don’t put you off, you should go ahead and buy it, as it’s a brilliant device in so many ways.

Features of the HTC Magic include:

* 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus
* Video recording
* Display: TFT, 320 x 480 pixels (3.2 inches) with auto-rotate
* GPS receiver with Google Maps and digital compass
* Music player (MP3, AAC, AAC+, WMA formats)
* Messaging: SMS, MMS, Email
* Ringtones: MP3 ringtones
* Internet: GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA (7.2 Mbps)
* Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0 with Enhanced Data Rate, mini-USB 2.0, Wi-Fi
* Memory: 288 MB RAM plus microSD memory card
* Vibration alert
* Quadband GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) plus HSDPA/WCDMA (900/2100 MHz)
* Size: 113 x 56 x 13.7 mm
* Weight: 116g
* Talktime: 400 – 450 minutes
* Battery standby: 420 – 660 hours

The subject was “Jim sent you photos on Tagged ” and the body said:

Click Yes if you want to see the photos, otherwise click No.
But you have to click!

Please respond or John may think you said no

Here’s what it looked like:
tagged-email-small

I thought this site was suspicious and should not have clicked on the link, but I was curious and – let’s face it – I love documenting the rogues of the Internet. So, to find out about this Tagged site, I opened up a browser window and typed in “www.tagged.com” and signed up for an account.

Don’t sign up for an account. Whatever you do. I began by entering my first and last name, email address, password, and zip code. All of that seemed innocuous enough. It was the next page that made me think “scam.” Tagged proceeded to ask me to enter my Gmail user ID and password.

Unless you’ve been under a rock, you should already know to never, ever, ever, enter the userid and password of your email account (or any other account) into a site not run by your email provider. This makes all your emails, address book contacts – everything – open to inspection by Tagged. I’ve read on other web sites that Tagged uses these to spam all of your friends into joining Tagged, totally without your knowledge and using your email account to do it! This makes it almost impossible for you to block these Tagged emails with your standard mail filters, because if you try to block a Tagged spam masquerading as a friend’s email, you can wind up inadvertently blocking legitimate emails from your friend.

Tagged then asked for my address, home telephone number, and mobile number. Not happy with entering this information, I entered “123 Main St.” and “919-555-1212? for my home number. Tagged flagged these as bogus and requested my REAL information. Fine, I changed it to “123 Poplar Ave.” and “919-626-3764? – a made-up home number.

This got me past the filter, but I left my mobile number blank. I was then presented with an almost never-ending series of screens demanding I enter my mobile number. I must have pressed “Skip” a half-dozen times. The previous page didn’t indicate a mobile number was a requirement but Tagged behaved like a petulant little child when I refused it.

Then Tagged a few marketing screens popped up, asking me totally bizarre questions such as “do you like fishing?” I frankly ignored the content of most of them, too flabbergasted at this point to believe what I was seeing.

Finally, when I was done with this ridiculous registration, I was presented with a page that looked remarkably similar to other social media sites to the point that Tagged could get sued for copping their look and feel. Through a search box, I found the friend who sent me the email. For some strange reason, a number of other search hits were returned, some of them showing what looked like exotic dancers or escorts. Clicking on my friend’s photo, I was taken to his page where among the friends listed were, surprisingly, a bunch more ladies of questionable repute. Now I don’t know a ton about my the guy we rented the condo from, but it would seriously surprise me if this is the kind of company he keeps.

To put it mildly, this was one of the most unusual, invasive, jaw-droppingly bizarre so-called social media sites I’ve ever experienced. Avoid it like the plague, and promptly delete any emails you get with the subject “ sent you photos on Tagged ” It’s scary what’s going on there.

Good things seem to come in pairs for the company while out-and-out upgrades are always good news for the user. With two jewels in the crown and two pros on the squad, HTC march towards PocketPC dominance and the Touch Pro2 looks like it has what it takes to lead the campaign.
More powerful gear and more impressive shell than the original Pro, HTC Touch Pro2 is in charge of the armored unit, while the Diamond2 tackles the infantry.

PocketPC is definitely the HTC game but it sure isn’t a one horse race. The list of prominent number 2’s is perhaps about to be continued with an XPERIA. On the other hand, the launch of the Touch Pro2 is perhaps timed just right to beat another major headliner from the Symbian camp – the Nokia N97.

Anyway, that’s just the background. The real thing is how the Touch Pro2 handles and performs. A number two can’t be much of prophet we guess but a well-done upgrade can bring in enough profit.
Key features

* Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support and HSDPA 7.2Mbps
* 3.6″ 65K-color touchscreen WVGA display
* Five row full QWERTY side-sliding keyboard of brilliant ergonomics
* Revamped TouchFLO 3D Home screen and gesture controls
* Wi-Fi and built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS
* Qualcomm MSM7200A 528 Mhz CPU and 288 MB DDR SDRAM
* Dedicated graphics chip (64MB RAM reserved for graphics)
* 3.15 MP auto focus camera
* Active stylus
* Touch-sensitive zoom bar
* Standard miniUSB port and Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP
* microSD memory expansion
* TV out
* Teeter game aboard
* Cool YouTube client
* Excellent video playback
* MS Office Mobile document editor
* Opera 9.5 web browser

Main disadvantages

* Considerable size and weight
* Average sunlight legibility
* No standard 3.5mm audio jack
* Poor camera performance
* No camera flash
* No FM radio by default (can be enabled with unofficial third-party software)

Talking upgrade, the HTC Touch Pro2 takes a leap forward in screen terms pumping up both resolution and size. It inherits the original Touch Pro but stands on the shoulders of a TytN too. The return of the tilting screen will sure be cheered. Now, add the revamped and improved exterior and you’ve got upgraders by the balls.
Oh, and that TouchFLO UI facelift we got a glimpse of on the new Diamond2 is just begging for another shot. So, the upgrade kit is all there but justifying the extra dime is the real deal and that’s exactly what we are about to check.

We hailed the new Diamond and as long as the new Pro follows suit it sure has nothing to fear. But it’d better be keen on action and fit to play along, cause we’re not letting it go unchallenged. Unboxing starts right after the jump.

Google Ion, of course, HTC Magic, running Android and in a fancy new outfit.

The Google Ion is obviously hardware and design-wise identical to the Vodafone-exclusive HTC Magic smartphone. However it’s got the Google I/O conference logo on the back, it comes in shiny black/blue and the retail package has a SIM card with 1-month T-Mobile service, which initially led us to believe that it’s c-branded by T-Mobile USA (but guess what, it’s not).
The difference from the T-Mobile G1 comes with the bundled OS update (Cupcake) and the lack of a hardware keyboard.

There also seems to be more good news for Android lovers on the horizon. According to Andy Rubin, senior director for Mobile Platforms for Google and the spearhead of the Android operating system, there will be at least 18 Android-running phones on the market by the end of the year. That number might also go as high as twenty, coming from eight or nine different manufacturers.

And finally, Google announced their next Android Developer challenge. Participating developers will be able to submit applications in a total of 10 categories starting in August.

The Android users will vote the applications and rate them in order to get the 200 best in the final round.

The prizes range up to 100 000 US dollars for each category plus up to 150 000 US dollars for the three overall winners.

The hotly anticipated Palm Pre smartphone will sport iTunes support, once it appears on the market. This provides a simple and easy way (if you are using a Mac or you’re just dependent on your iPhone/iPod infatuation) to transfer DRM-free music, photos and videos to your Palm Pre.

According to the company iTunes will have no trouble recognizing the Palm Pre, once you connect it to a computer through USB and choose the “media sync” option on the handset. From then on you can choose which media files to interchange as long as they are DRM-free.

The other good news is that the Palm Pre will also be able to act as a mass storage drive providing the easiest available way for loading content. Once connected to a computer using the USB cable, Pre will appear as a drive on the computer desktop. You can drag and drop music, photos or video files onto your Pre, or drag files from your Pre to the computer.

But here’s some oil to pour on the fire – the T-Mobile Austria site have put up a placeholder for a 32GB iPhone. So far there isn’t a picture or price and the ‘details’ link leads to a dummy page.

According to the crystal ball of rumors, the next-gen iPhone will have two versions with 16GB or 32GB built-in memory. 32GB next-gen iPhone, 32GB ‘coming soon’ iPhone, can you spot where this is going? Then again, there are the echoes of age-old 32GB iPhone 3G rumors.

Anyway, this is probably just T-Mobile Austria jumping the gun but since the ‘Tell A Friend’ link seems to be the only thing working on the details page, this would fuel the ever-growing hype even further.

Update: The place holder has already been removed by T-Mobile off their website.

In short, it’s an outstanding touchscreen smartphone running the very powerful Windows Mobile operating system. Features include a 5 megapixel camera plus secondary video camera, 3.2 inch ultra-high resolution display, music player, FM radio and GPS receiver. With a huge 288 MB of RAM, HSDPA and WLAN support, the Touch Diamond2 really isn’t missing anything at all!
Review: May 2009.

The original HTC Touch Diamond was the phone that launched HTC as a major player in the world of smartphones, and the HTC Touch Diamond2 is (obviously) its replacement. The Touch Diamond2 is a bigger phone, with a larger, higher resolution screen, an upgraded camera and longer battery life. So it’s an obvious upgrade path for owners of the original Touch Diamond. Like the Diamond, it uses the same TouchFLO? 3D user interface with a full touchscreen, and runs Windows Mobile® 6.1 Professional, so everything is very familiar. If you don’t mind the extra size and weight, then the Diamond2 is definitely an improvement. The larger screen makes the touchscreen UI easier to use and the HD is absolutely brilliant for viewing photos or watching videos. There’s no doubt about it: the Touch Diamond2 is a brilliant device.

The Touch Diamond2 isn’t lacking anything. Built on the extremely powerful and flexible Windows Mobile® 6.1 Professional operating system, this is a phone that will appeal to tech-heads who love to customise and tweak their phone to perfection. Whilst the learning curve for new users is steep, ultimately there are few limitations to how you use the phone. The TouchFLO? 3D user interface rivals the iPhone in ease of use, and the huge screen makes the UI come to life.

Photography has perhaps been HTC’s biggest weakness, and whilst the Touch Diamond2’s 5 megapixel camera is certainly an improvement on the original Diamond’s camera, it’s only average for this class of phone. Still, with autofocus enabled, and 5 megs of pixels, you can take excellent print quality photos in good lighting conditions. The device has a secondary video camera too.

Musically, the phone holds its own. With a whopping 288 MB RAM plus microSD memory card support, there’s no shortage of space for storing music and videos. The phone can handle all popular digital music formats, and there’s an FM radio built in too. Headphones connect via the HTC ExtUSB connector, which combines USB and audio connectivity in one.

In addition to USB, the phone supports WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. The Bluetooth supports A2DP for wireless stereo headsets. As well as using WiFi, you can make use of the 7.2 Mbps HSDPA capability for fast data downloads. Web browsing is excellent on the Diamond2, with fast data access and the large touchscreen.

Other features include GPS satnav, and a G-sensor, or accelerometer, which detects motion and orientation, for example switching automatically between portrait and landscape modes when you rotate the display.

The battery life has been improved too, with HTC claiming up to 5 hours of talktime in 3G (under optimum conditions.) In practice, we think that most users will want to charge the phone every one or two days, depending on how much use is made of the various functions. Powering a screen this big takes a fair bit of juice, so it’s not just the number of calls you make that matters.

In summary, the Touch Diamond2 is a worthy successor to the original Touch Diamond, and is a superb phone. You might also consider the HTC Touch HD, which has an even larger screen, but at the price of increased weight and bulk. Both are outstanding phones.

Review: May 2009.

* Video recording
* Display: TFT, 320 x 480 pixels (3.2 inches) with auto-rotate
* GPS receiver with Google Maps and digital compass

HTC Touch Diamond2 is next on our roll call of MWC debuts but this time it’s less about the brand spanking novelty and more about balanced and sensible upgrades. People tend to have second thoughts about sequels but this one here is signed by HTC and may as well be the director’s cut of a blockbuster.

It is only recently that Windows Mobile fans are receiving the treatment they deserve after years of undeserved exile. The WinMo devices are no longer stigmatized as ugly bricks with awkward handling and HTC are one of the main agents of this change. The HTC Touch Diamond was one of the most complete devices and its stand-out styling earned it well deserved popularity.

HTC Touch Diamond2 official photos

We now welcome its successor, somewhat insipidly named HTC Touch Diamond2. Improving the functionality of the original Diamond, the Diamond2 comes with rather different design that is certain to raise some degree of discussion. But it’s the performance that will make the difference between a mere Number 2 and a real gem.

Key features:

3.2″ 65K-color WVGA display

Latest TouchFLO 3D

Qualcomm MSM7200A 528 Mhz CPU and 288 MB RAM

Dedicated graphics chip (64MB RAM reserved for graphics)

Quad-band GSM support

3G with HSDPA 7.2Mbps and HSUPA 2Mbps

Wi-Fi and built-in GPS receiver

Stereo FM radio with RDS

5 MP auto focus camera with excellent image quality

microSD card slot

Touch-sensitive zoom bar

MS Office Mobile document editor

Opera 9.5 web browser

Standard miniUSB slot and Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP

Teeter game

Great audio quality

YouTube client

Excellent video playback

Main disadvantages:

Fingerprint nightmare

Average sunlight legibility

Questionable build quality

No TV out port

No standard 3.5mm audio jack

No magnetic stylus

The HTC Touch Diamond2 outdoes its predecessor with a larger and higher-res screen, a vastly superior camera and more RAM. The TouchFLO 3D UI has also been improved and now covers the underlying Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS from tip to toe. Sounds like a decent update with a keen eye on the competition too, which is getting stiffer by the day.

While the original Diamond had only the Samsung i900 Omnia to tackle, the HTC Touch Diamond2 faces a tougher battle. With a few new arrivals on the touchscreen market (Symbian S60, Android and BlackBerry OS have all jumped in) the Diamond2 will need spotless performance to match its predecessor’s success.

There is quite a lot to test so let’s not waste any more time. On the next page we open the box and meet the contender. Will it be diamond hard or will it crumble under the lightest of touches?

T-Mobile                G1 Review

In a nutshell: The T-Mobile G1 is the first “Googlephone” running the Android operating system. The G1 has a large touch-sensitive display and a slide out QWERTY keyboard. It’s best features are its mobile internet applications such as Gmail and Google Maps, as well as built-in GPS and WiFi support. Weaknesses include the dire camera, lack of memory, difficulty interfacing with a PC or Mac and general “beta” feel to the whole thing. We’d recommend waiting for the next Android phone, or choosing the iPhone 3G instead.

The T-Mobile G1 is the first handset to use Google’s Android operating system. To us, it feels pretty much like a beta release, rather like the original iPhone – good in some ways, but not really cutting it as a phone.

Available in a choice of white or black, the device looks a bit like the iPhone’s ugly sister, but you can slide the screen to one side to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard beneath. The screen itself is touch-sensitive, giving you a choice of input methods. The accelerometer automatically rotates the screen between landscape and portrait modes, depending on how you hold the phone. It’s not a small phone: too big to use single handedly, and really heavy too. Weighing 158g, it’s the heaviest smartphone currently on the market – the same as Sony Ericsson’s Xperia, but not half as good looking.

OK, so this is the long awaited “Googlephone”, and it’s all about Google. This is a 3G phone that’s clearly designed for accessing the mobile internet, with a large screen, web browser, Google applications and email. But plenty of smartphones can do that. What’s special about the G1? Well, of course it’s great for browsing the web, with its big screen (3.2 inches is massive, let’s face it), ultra-fast 7.2 Mbps HSDPA connection, WiFi and easy text input. It’s completely Google flavoured. It’s integrated with Gmail, Google maps, Google search, YouTube and Facebook. But this is a double-edged sword. Suppose you want to do something that’s not approved by the Google thought police? Like synchronise with Outlook. Nope, no can do. Won’t even speak to a PC. or a Mac. Don’t even think about replacing your BlackBerry with a G1!

You can download new apps from Android Market – some free, some you have to pay for. There are going to be loads more developed in the future, so no doubt lots of interesting stuff will be available here. Android is a multitasking operating system, so you can run apps in parallel, like view Google Maps whilst talking on the phone. Be careful though, as the more apps you run, the slower the phone will be and the more likely it is to crash. We don’t yet have a view on how robust Android is. It’s not the kind of thing you can tell from a short test session. We’ll have to wait and see what our users think after they’ve been using their Android machines for some time.

It’s clearly intended as a mobile internet device rather than a multimedia wizard. Cos multimedia wizard it isn’t! The camera is about as good as the original iPhone’s camera, i.e. at the bottom of the class. Although it’s rated at 3.2 megapixels, it has no flash, no zoom, no video capability. There is an MP3 player, but no FM radio. One good thing it does have though is built-in GPS. This is a nice implementation that integrates well with Google Maps and even has a digital compass.

The G1 comes with a 2GB microSD card, which is inadequate really. Thankfully you can upgrade this to 8GB, but we feel that an 8GB card should have been supplied in the first place. We’re pleased that it’s got quadband support though, as well as 3G.

Even so, we’re disappointed by the number of things that have been left out. No predictive text, no voice dialling, no video calling, no MMS video capability, no ability to use the phone as a modem. Pause for breath … no ability to sync with a PC or Mac, no FM radio, no document viewer, no video recorder!

Battery life deserves a paragraph of its own. Its awful! If you use this phone as intended (i.e. all the time) you’ll need to recharge it every few hours. And with a device as big and heavy as this, there’s really no excuse for this.

We think that the G1 is going to turn out to be very much like the original iPhone. Massively over-hyped, brilliant at some things, but with too many flaws to be considered a mature technology. Some will love it, some will hate it. We steer a middle course and have tried to recognise the good bits, whilst pointing out the bad bits. Please don’t send us hate mail like Apple lovers/haters did after our iPhone review. Remember … it’s just a phone.

Features of the T-Mobile G1 include:

Google Android operating system

3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus

Display: TFT, 65k colours, 480 x 320 pixels,                  3.2 inches

MP3 player (MP3, AAC, AMR, WMA, MIDI, WAV, OGG Vorbis, M4A formats)

MP3 ringtones

Handsfree speaker

Messaging: SMS, MMS, Instant Messaging, Gmail

GPS with Google Maps and digital compass

Caller ID

Vibration alert

Memory: 2GB microSD card (expandable to 8GB)

Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB, WiFi

In a nutshell: The HTC Touch Diamond2 is an upgraded version of the original Touch Diamond, with a larger screen, and improved camera and battery life.
Best buy: *Free* with half-price line rental from Mobiles.co.uk.

Like the Diamond, it uses the same TouchFLO 3D user interface with a full touchscreen, and runs Windows Mobile® 6.1 Professional, so everything is very familiar.

The TouchFLO 3D user interface rivals the iPhone in ease of use, and the huge screen makes the UI come to life.

In a nutshell: The HTC Magic is the second Googlephone using the Android operating system.
Best buy: *Free* from Dialaphone.

Review: May 2009.

3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus

Video recording

The rumored Sony Ericsson Frances has now received a proper name – it will be called Sony Ericsson C903. Much like a slider version of the 5 megapixel Cyber-Shot Filippa, but with GPS receiver.

The competition for leaked upcoming and unannounced phones continues. In this new edition we present you the Sony Ericsson C903, also known under the codename Frances.

The new Cyber-Shot will join the family with 5 megapixel camera, 2.4-inch QVGA screen, GPS and slide design solution. It should be an upgraded version of the SE C901 (Filippa), but there is no info about xenon flash presence. The usual suspect aplications are here: PhotoFix, Face Detection and Smile Shutter.

Sony Ericsson C903

Wi-Fi connectivity will not be available since C903 will have a lower tag price than the flagman C905.

The official announcement, logically, will be at MWC 2009 and the expected release – in the end of Q2 this year.

In a nutshell: The HTC Touch 3G is a compact touchscreen smartphone equipped with a 3.2 megapixel camera, MP3 player, FM radio, GPS, HSDPA, WiFi and Bluetooth. It’s a very lightweight smartphone, but we feel that the display is too small and the battery life is poor.
Best buy: *Free* from Dialaphone.

Review: April 2009.

The HTC Touch 3G is the most compact version of HTC’s touchscreen smartphone range. It’s very compact indeed and weighs just 96g, making it one of the lightest smartphones currently available. But it’s small size means that it has a small display, and this is bound to be bad news for a touchscreen phone.

The Touch 3G isn’t light on features. It includes most of the features of its big brother, the HTC Touch HD. The list includes the Windows Mobile operating system, GPS, MP3 player plus radio, HSDPA 7.2 Mbps and plenty of memory. The compromises that have been made to fit everything into the small form factor are threefold: the display, the camera and the battery.

The display is disappointingly small. At just 2.8 inches across and with a lowly resolution of 320 x 240 pixels and 65k colours, it just isn’t quite big enough for either the touchscreen UI or the web browser.

The camera is a let down too, being 3.2 megapixels and fixed focus. It’s really just a toy camera.

The battery life isn’t the worst we’ve seen – not by a long way! But it certainly isn’t the best, and it isn’t really enough to power the features of this phone. If you use the WiFi, the Bluetooth and the GPS, you’ll drain the battery rather quickly.

Don’t get us wrong – the Touch 3G isn’t all bad. The TouchFLO 3D user interface is a great UI, but you’ll need to be careful and patient to use it on this screen size. We also like the Windows Mobile OS. Web browsing is fast, using either the HSDPA 7.2 Mbps connection or the WiFi, but again, it’s compromised by the screen size and resolution. It’s the same story with the GPS and Google Maps.

The audio capabilities of the Touch 3G are good however. It’s equipped with a music player capable of playing all the main digital formats – MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA – and is easy to synch with Windows Media Player on a PC. The phone comes with plenty of built-in memory and can take microSD cards too.

HTC have tried hard to produce a feature-packed yet compact device, and they have succeeded. But having used it, you understand why most smartphones are so much larger.
